Can anyone recommend a simple Indian recipe to make with children?

Posted: November 7th, 2010 | Author: admin | Filed under: International Recipes | Tags: , , , , , | 12 Comments »

I’m teaching 3 classes of 8-10 year olds and am looking for simple sweet and savoury Indian recipes that I can make with children in under an hour, not too spicy and not involving any nuts as part of a topic on India.

Thanks for your help.

I don’t know of any recipes using children between the ages of eight and ten. They run too fast.

An idea may be to look in the yellow pages for Indian organizations and they will help. Doesn’t the library have ideas on this subject? Native Americans may be another category that would help you. Have fun with the kids. You are so lucky to work with them.

Here is one of my favorite!!!

    Mango Soufflé

This recipe is a sure success. It is light and not too sweet. It goes well when serves with ripe fresh mango slices.

    3-6 Tablespoons Powdered Sugar
    1 tin mango pulp
    2 packets Plain Knox Gelatin
    2 1/2 cups water
1 12 oz Extra Creamy Cool Whip
3 Egg whites beaten until stiff
Heat the 2 1/2 cups of water to warm. Add the gelatin. Mix well until the gelatin is dissolved. Add the sugar. Keep aside. Let it cool completely.

Place the cool whip in a glass or stainless steel bowl. Placer this bowl over ice. Add the Mango pulp. Mix the cooled gelatin mixture. Now fold in the egg whites until they are folded in well.

Remove in a serving container. Let it set overnight. Serve with a few fresh mango slices.

    Try this

    5to 6 boiled potatoes.
some salt, garam masala, little lime juice, coriander leaves.

Mash boiled potatoes – add all the ingredients. Make into balls and flatten them. Heat a nonstick pan with some oil. Place the potato patties on it and let it grill on both sides. If needed pour in some oil on the pan. Once done put the patties on a plate, decorate with onion rings if you like, it can be elimated. Eat it with tomato sauce.

Sweet foods – Suji (Semolina) Halwa
Take about A cup of semolina. Keep it gently roasted before hand.

Pour the roasted semolina in a round bottom pan. Pour some ghee or clarified butter and heat it, it should smell nice. Add about a cup and half of water and sugar. let it cook. The water will dry up and you should be able to make a soft ball with your fingers. Once it cooks put it in a serving dish and decorate with cleaned raisins

A lot of Indians are vegatarians, so any recepies made with children would not very popular. The end result is that you are going to wind up with an extremely large amount of leftovers.

Anything can be fun with kids, you just have to make it fun.

Start off by letting them make some curry…

    Basic Curry:
    5 Tablespoons ground coriander
    7 Tablespoons ground cumin
    1 Tablespoon Paprika
    1 Tablespoon Turmeric
    1 Tablespoon chilli powder
    1 teaspoon ground fennel seeds
    1 teaspoon ginger powder
    1 teaspoon garlic powder

Have them marinate some chicken breasts with a bit of curry and put it in a grill pan and roast it.

Make a cucumber salad – cucumbers, garlic, rice wine vinegar, sugar, some hot pepper and onions.

Another idea is to have them do all the prep work side by side with you so you can teach them how to chop and measure.

I would try any recipe as long as it wasn’t difficult. Look at the sources for some great ideas.
